Segment 4 follows the Central Drainage Ditch from Gamble Street to Lake Henrietta and is the final segment in the Capital Cascade Trail (CCT) project. The Central Drainage Ditch drains a significant portion of the urban area and is an impaired water body identified on the State of Florida’s 303(d) list. The vision for Segment 4 is to improve and enhance the Central Drainage Ditch with attenuation areas throughout. Improvements are necessary because the drainage area for Segments 3 and 4 alone is estimated to be 6,595 acres. The project includes stream/bank restoration, channel stabilization, erosion control and vegetated buffers for water quality enhancements. Blueprint is proposing to build a regional stormwater pond on approximately 40 acres at the south end of Segment 4 to accept run-off from new impervious surface and provide retrofit for existing facilities.
The 12-foot trail will also be designed along this segment. The trail will connect with the St. Marks-Tallahassee Historic Trail, a twenty mile pedestrian/bicycle corridor extending south toward the Florida coast. It will also provide linkages between the St. Marks Trail and the Georgia, Florida and Alabama Trail, a planned 52-mile pedestrian, equestrian and bicycle trail that will extend from Tallahassee through the Apalachicola National Forest to Carrabelle.
