Protecting the Fred George Sink
Basin in northwestern Tallahassee is a priority for Blueprint 2000.
The basin consists of 2,710 acres and is an area characterized as
freshwater swamp and a stream to sink watershed. The Fred
George Basin is characterized by a high percentage of developed
area, in the 70% range. Despite this, the streams and the
ephemeral wetlands surrounding them remain largely in a good natural
condition. Flooding is an issue and has been reported during
extreme events.
Leon County and Blueprint are in the process
of obtaining the most environmentally sensitive parcels containing
Fred George Sink and the wetlands surrounding the sink at the bottom
of the Fred George Basin. The Intergovernmental Agency has taken action
to move this project from Tier 2, projects without associated funding,
to Tier 1 of the Blueprint program. As such, Blueprint has now
committed $2.77 million toward the acquisition of Fred George Sink
and surrounding 174 acres for the protection of ground water.
Leon County is pursuing acquisition of five parcels and the Florida
Communities Trust has approved a grant for partial reimbursement.
